How to upload documents

The basic concept is simple:

1. Navigate to the desired folder.
2. If you are on the View page of the folder, click on add new item and select the appropriate item type (see below). If you can't find the item type you want in the list, click on the Contents tab, where you have two choices for adding a new item: as above, or by selecting the item type from a list (for User Guide chapters, choose File; see below) and then clicking the add new item button.
3. On the Edit File page, type a name for the document (for example, "How to Upload a Document") and an optional description.
4. Click the Browse button and navigate to the file and select it.
5. Click Save. The upload process seems to take forever, even on a high speed connection, but it should complete within a few minutes. There is no progress indicator.

Which content type do I pick?

• User Guide chapters (ODT or PDF) use file.
• Pages to be displayed on the website (like this one) use page.

How to overwrite an existing document

Normally you should not do this. It is much better to upload the replacement with a different filename (see our naming conventions).

If you do want to overwrite a document:

1. Go to the required folder and click on the name of the document. This takes you to the View page for the document.
2. Click the Edit tab. This takes you to the Edit page for the document. Wait until the page stops loading; this may take awhile for a ODT file, but is quick for PDF.
3. Click the Browse button, locate the file you want to upload, and click Open or OK or whatever your file finder dialog shows. You return to the Edit page.
4. Scroll down and click Save.

Why does my OOo file look so ugly or like gibberish?

Plone treats an ODT file as text and displays characters that may look like gibberish in your browser. However, the file itself is fine.
